paul mescal makes a very fine lead man and gladiator, but his character simply echos maximus and his beliefs. there’s sadly nothing inspiring about his character that we didn’t already see in the first gladiator. he did have some very cool lines; i could listen to him talk in that deep voice all day. the action is entertaining and the music is fantastic. the opening credits were absolutely beautiful.
i feel like there’s something missing from the film though, it didn’t really flow well. maybe it has something to do with may calamawy being reduced to an uncredited background role… if there was an existing cut where she played the female lead, ridley should’ve kept it.
