Glicked? Wickediator? Whatever you want to call it, I’ve completely my double feature concluding with Gladiator 2! I saw a post on X about this film that stuck with me. Saying how Paul Mescal doesn’t give off the movie star vibe whatsoever, but after seeing him in this film I’m not sure how anyone could support that. Not to bash that person’s opinion, but I’d argue he just solidified his status as one of the most exciting talents in Hollywood. He brought energy that mirrors Russell Crowe’s Maximus, while adding layers of vulnerability that felt refreshingly distinct. Call me crazy, but this could very well mark the beginning of his ascent into true movie star status. Then on top of all of this Ridley Scott had the brilliancy to throw in Denzel Washington!? The dynamic between the two for me is one of the film’s greatest strengths.
I’ll admit it was nice to see Pedro Pascal pickup a sword again, but the trophies go to Mescal’s extraordinary performance alongside Denzel’s unforgettable presence. It creates a perfect balance between legacy, and innovation! Gladiator 2 is not just any ordinary sequel, it’s an epic tale that proves the ancient Roman Colosseum still has the power to inspire, and amaze!
