Probably first saw this before I knew about Lynch's whole deal, but it's surprising how, for a pretty straight historical biopic, there's a lot of his whole deal in it.

Alternating imagery of a beatific woman exuding a frayed peace and frantic horror
The sound of droning industrial machinery pervading every frame, even if it's merely a gas lamp whose power supply…

One thing I really liked upon rewatch is how Miyazaki doesn't sugarcoat the grossness of the big bugs. They're horrible looking monstrosities, but Nausicaa cares as much about them as she does her fluffy cat and the chocobos. Her traumatic flashback that's doled out in pieces is about a big baby cockroach!
