Are you going to Heaven?
I’m kinda glad I gave this another shot because I do appreciate it more on second viewing. I guess part of me liked more is because I took notes on my journal while watching it (shoutout to Lea for giving me that idea) and I was able to pick up more of what the film was saying and how it was told and such.
Like visually, it’s truly amazing and flawless across the board. Like there’s some details from the lighting and color scheme in this that I absolutely loved and there’s some truly powerful shots that solidly captures the deeper emotions of the characters at any given moments. I also buy more the relationship between Joshua and Alphie this time around and I liked how their dynamic grows within how they interacted with each other and their individual characters grew, along being aid by some really solid performances from Washington and Yuma Voyles. Plus even tho many concepts this film explored has been before in films like Blade Runner, Ex Machina and Logan to name a few examples, I still like the approach Edwards was going for (even if I think the execution wasn’t on the same level with those ideas) and the world building here is truly exceptional. Along side with some great sequences like “the attack on New Asia” is truly remarkable filmmaking and where the film almost emotionally landed for me.
Key emphasis on almost, because there’s still somethings that hold it back from being truly amazing (or at the least good). The problems I had with the first viewing are still intact unfortunately. Like the ideas and commentary that I thought were great on paper felt like they weren’t fully fleshed out because of the rushed pacing and what I assumed condensed time crunch (condensed as in hopefully the 4 hour cut of this comes around) and thus being a little hard to be attached to it on a deeper level. Not to mention that the film doesn’t often slow down to let the characters truly grow outside of their basic characteristics that were established at the beginning because of how it’s more pushing for plot than for its characters. Also while I like the world building and the metaphor about the oppressed nation being destroyed by a an evil corrupted nation, I feel like they didn’t do a lot of deeper insight with it that it becomes a bit one noted and not deeper than it could have been (which also makes the American cops characters being very bland and one noted). Also the third act just felt rushed (despite a solid ending to that third act) and a lot of what it was going for and saying came and went as soon as they were established.
Like I said. I’m glad I gave this a second shot and liked it more because of it, but I still feel like there’s a great film that is stucked in a studio edited down version and that’s truly frustrating. I hope one day it will be released as a truly great film. But that’s just me and my rambling thoughts tho.
Oh I almost forgot, the Radiohead needle drop in this film slaps. Yeah that’s all I got.
