“My expectations were low, but Holy Fuck!”
This is this years Bohemian Rhapsody. A LGBT related film made by straight cis people who claim to be supportive of the LGBT community only for the film to be a hate letter to the LGBT community and thus make the straight cis people feel better about themselves and award circles will go crazy for while simply ignoring the brilliant works of art created by LGBT people that also came out the same year that are more meaningful, creative and have more impact towards the audience both on a creative and an emotional level (like this year’s I Saw The TV Glow as an example).
Baffling, boring and terribly misguided at every creative decision this film made and how it failed to give any genuincy in terms of it all. Awful writing, terrible color grading, performances that tried (?) but comes off as they didn’t wanted to be there or being laughably terrible, poor musical numbers with no style and personality both in terms of vocal performances and overall directing, a mishap of tones that don’t feel cohesive, themes and ideas that are poorly developed, horrible pacing that rushes any key moments that could have fleshed out it’s characters and themes, and allows for honest to go emotion to hit (and even in those “slow down” moments, it has little to no impact whatsoever) and it hits to the levels of pretentiousness (I hate using that word unless I truly mean it) that think it’s important yet it’s ultimately shallow and empthy that just pissed me off. If you like it, good for you. But for me, it’s easily one of the worst films I’ve seen in awhile and one of the worst of the decade so far. The fact this is an awards contender and will most likely win tons of awards while so many better, more creative, and more emotionally impactful films that came out this year are being completely shut down from this award season is not surprising but still insulting nonetheless. Congratulations to Deadpool & Wolverine for no longer being my least favorite film of the year.
The trans community deserves better than this.
