No lie, I literally did the Leo pointing me when Stephen McKinley Henderson showed up. Man I love seeing him in anything he’s in.
As someone who’s interested in being a journalist and a photographer after I’m done with school, I appreciate the vibe and approach Alex Garland went with. Making it more of a road trip type of film with these group of journalists looking at the hell placed upon them and capturing pictures that reflect that hell, and I love he plays with the use of pictures at any given moment that shows the importance of what the picture means for the person taking it (whatever it’s for memory sake, or they would find whatever they’re taking interesting) and what it means for the people looking at it. Not to mention it gives great performances from the likes of Dunst, Spaeny, and Plemons, the use of sound and gunpowder is very affective, it’s visually pleasing, and there’s some really solid use of tension sprinkled over it.
The film does faulters with the lack of deeper connection towards the political landscape this film creates and the parallels it has with the real world politics, and how the film drops the whole road trip vibe by the time we get to the final act and such. Which kinda hold it back from being truly special. But I can say that overall I quite enjoyed the film more than I did (even though I get the criticisms behind it all) and while this ins’t on the levels as Annihilation or Ex Machina, it’s a vast improvement over Men. That’s a big win.
