the most beautiful coming of age story i’ve seen in a very long time. the main performance at the center is what makes it for me because she actually looks like a vampire. her performance is so nuanced, it’s subtle but so impactful. this film is a very wholesome, ironically humanistic approach to what vampires are. the music that’s playing throughout the story is just gorgeous.
the film taps into that awkwardness of the human experience…it’d be hard to not acknowledge the obvious subtext of a girl growing into a woman…those awkward bodily changes you almost want to fight against. i even enjoyed the male performance of her “love interest” (which never happens for me) it’s romantic but not in a gratuitous or perverted way…it’s not lustful…it’s just sweet...innocent. to keep it brief, (not that you couldn’t already tell from the quirky title) this tale is about a young vampire who is a late bloomer, in terms of the predatory nature she’s supposed to possess as a vampire. her fangs haven’t even come in yet. thus, the clock is ticking with the disappointment of her family to succumb to her nature as a creature of the dark.
there is one scene, where her consenting suicidal person, asks “on your deathbed, which one would you choose?” she automatically pulls out her favorite record and starts playing it. the adorable dancing and stealing awkward glances at one another…i cried like a baby. all in all, this was lovely and poignant. the main character is without a doubt, my favorite vampire of any film i have ever seen in my life. i wish i could give it 10 stars oh my god…just perfect to me.
