Amateurs seek the sun, get eaten. Power stays in the shadows.
Christopher Nolan has pulled J. Robert Oppenheimer out of the darkness of history and into the light of our currently shaped, power-play reality.
Cillian Murphy and Robert Downey Jr. are incredible in their leading fission-fusion performances that lay out the battleship like back-and-forth network of their past and present. The further along I got into the film, the more I lost my sense of who these characters were being played by. I was watching Oppenheimer and Lewis Strauss, not Murphy and Downey Jr. I was watching Ernest Lawrence, not Josh Hartnett. I was watching Kitty Oppenheimer, not Emily Blunt. I was watching Leslie Groves, not Matt Damon. Every single actor and actress brought their A-games with magnificent performances.
The pacing is also perfect. At 3 hours, there is absolutely no drag, no boredom. Every single piece of dialogue is important and remembered.
There a couple genuinely terrifying moments, the Trinity test being one of them, that completely suck you in that you have to pat yourself down to make sure you are still sitting there, watching a movie.
Ludwig Goransson's burning score adds fuel to the explosive fire.
Nolan has crafted something special here, and the common understatment of great filmmaking is going to be crafted out of new canvases with this glorious piece of art.
