Bleak yet brimming with heart, Marriage Story is basically two hours of watching Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson emotionally obliterate each other—aka, top-tier acting. There are some truly incredible scenes (you know the one), and both leads are firing on all cylinders.
That said, it does drag in places, and with all the hype, I was expecting more. Still, a great watch, just maybe not the life-altering masterpiece its reputation suggests.
A pretty solid film with a great premise, though not without its flaws. The pacing is uneven at times, some of the dialogue feels clunky, and the ending is oddly abrupt and a bit confusing. It definitely could have wrapped things up in a more satisfying way.
That being said, Andrew Garfield and Michael Shannon give fantastic performances, and the film’s tense moments are by far the highlight. The close-up camerawork adds a raw, intimate feel, and the suspenseful score really amplifies the intensity. Despite its issues, it’s still a gripping watch with a strong subject matter at its core.
