• The Sandman

    The Sandman

    ★★★★

A truly creepy short cartoon, with gorgeous puppet/stop motion animation and a clear influence of German Expressionism, based on Hoffmann's short story of the same name.

Sandman is frightening and mesmerizing from the very first seconds of his appearance, he is terrifying and graceful at the same time. The surreal atmosphere and the ominous musical accompaniment only reinforces the feeling that something really bad is about to happen.

I'm really glad I didn't see it as a kid, but watched it at a more mature age. Poor child...

P.s. Kudos to Damian for a better quality version.

  • Hansel and Gretel

    Hansel and Gretel

    ★★★½

A good short film inspired by silent black and white expressionist horrors. Although the house where Hansel and Gretel lived didn't look very authentic, otherwise it came out just right.

The intertitles are nice, the musical score is grooving, the kids did their roles well, and the witch played by Robert's relative had terrific makeup and design.

Nothing special, but the animation is really decent, clearly inspired by the works of Burton and Selick.

Andrew Bryniarski is still best Lobo in live action, insanely comic accurate.

Hugh Grant was absolutely irresistible. As always, though. But it was really great to see him in a horror movie.
