Just as good as it was in theaters in 2016, yes I actually was one of the few people who paid to see this film. An absolute travesty that Ryan Gosling had two of his best films, this and Blade Runner 2049, be back-to-back flops, but at least he had maybe my favorite musical La La Land in between (playing Sebastian and Holland in the same year is insane). Russell Crowe gives one of his best performances in years, right before the fat-Crowe-will-have-his-vengeance stage (still need to see Unhinged). He’s so good with Shane Black’s dialogue and voiceover narration.
Gosling is fantastic as well (“No I didn’t, Janet” will never not make me laugh), his understanding of the material is what makes this such a seamless fit between him and Crowe. That is The Nice Guys’ biggest strength, Black’s script has two equally compelling and hilarious characters complementing each other and taking turns being the main character (Kiss Kiss Bang Bang was always RDJ’s movie as excellent as Val Kilmer was). Mean spirited with a hint of sweetness and male bonding, and some killer action sequences. The plot is perhaps a little too convoluted and the villains are a bit one-dimensional, but this deserves to be seen by as many eyes as Civil War was that same year (one of the MCU’s best, by the way).
