Wildly entertaining with some of the best editing of the year. It took me a bit of time to adjust to seeing iconic titans of comedy, some of whom are still alive, as characters in a film. It felt like watching actors playing dress up but the frantic pace and you are there quality of the filmmaking helped me to settle in. I grew to appreciate the young actors. It's a tall order to play such well-known figures without falling into mere imitation.
The concept of having the film take place in real time, ninety minutes before showtime, works. Despite knowing the outcome, I was still on edge wondering how they were going to pull it off. Rachel Sennott, who plays Rosie Shuster, was probably my favorite performance. I love her voice and screen presence. There's a nice rapport between her and Gabriel LaBelle as Lorne Michaels.
When the ninety minutes were up, I actually didn't want to leave. It's a testament on Ivan Rietman's accomplishment that I would've watched another ninety. I would've loved to see his cast and crew's rendition of SNL's pilot episode. Still I'm glad he reigned it in and kept it to under two hours. Unlike the recent *"Joker 2", I was highly entertained with a big smile on my face.
*For the record I appreciated "Joker 2" but it was nice to see a more audience friendly (without being dumbed down) film after sitting through the two hour plus "Foile A Dux" and "Megalopolis". Not to mention the three and a half hour "The Brutalist".
