“They don’t make em like they used to” isn’t always a negative.
A fitting companion with Virgin Suicides. Yet another Gen X take on mental illness that plays like an educational PSA in its’ attempts to be gritty. I found this marginally better, but it’s still a slog.
Some worthwhile moments as the women build community but ultimately the conflicts between them get contrived real quick. Winona Ryder is easily the best performance but Angelina Jolie is doing the most acting so I’m not surprised she won the Oscar. Never bought into the dynamic between Susanna and Lisa regardless of if they were friends or adversaries. Seemed like two people who would pass each other by, not become magnetized. Elizabeth Moss should’ve never stepped foot on a set again after whatever the fuck she was doing here. Brittany Murphy is shattering and dearly missed.
Ultimately he’s just adapting source material but I just don't think young James Mangold was the guy for this. He turns this into a reel of hysterics manufactured for awards clips. Glad he caught onto the fact that he’s not cut out for this and spent the rest of his career making films for the TVs in cigar stores. I’m sure the book is 100 times better.
But also I’m a man so who the fuck cares what I think. This has surely meant a lot to countless women and that’s nothing to sneeze at. I’m interrupting.
