Watched this because I absolutely loved Whiplash and pretty much got what I expected and wanted.
The many musical scenes are choreographed extremely well and I constantly found myself fascinated by the tight but smooth camera work done here. This is also what I respect the movie for: Solid directing, (I feel like I am starting to slowly become a Damien Chazelle fan :) and overall great production. The narrative, however left me cold and unimpressed. It's a wonderful facade that doesn't have anything in store for me beneath it.
The songs themselves didn't appeal to me that much either, but that's not even really a deal breaker. I think that musicals and their impact on traditional culture and media are more of an American thing, so naturally, as a European, I didn't really feel involved. And don't get me wrong, we definitely have Musicals here, but they're just not as big of a deal as the are in the US.
If this wasn't just a text based social media platform, I feel like I already attracted some death stares by now lol... And I have been putting off logging/reviewing David Fincher's Fight Club for a while too, because it's hard for me to constructively critique something universally loved...
After I was done with La La Land though, as some sort of an unofficial Epilogue, I just HAD to put on this legendary clip of La La Land getting wrongfully called on stage to accept Best Picture at the Oscars. I know that one of the producers, Jordan Horowitz, is on Letterboxd too, and he seems like a cool guy. He definitely didn't deserve all of that, but at least he handled it well and it's a pretty historical Award show moment that will not be forgotten for a while.
