This disquieting childhood drama feels like a thriller in the way that only real life can. Its central tension, about a young girl secretly presenting herself as a boy, is almost intensely unbearable to watch. The longer Zoé Heran’s titular protagonist sustains her secret, the further she wades into the awfulness of childhood prejudice, the more harrowing her inevitable exposure feels. Director Céline Sciamma constructs the progression with a sober but not uncaring observational eye, withholding judgment on any of her characters, including the adults who react with angst when the truth is revealed. This conscientious neutrality is perhaps more admirable than it is involving though; as clear-eyed as “Tomboy” is, it never quite breaks through to the levels of ecstatic truth that Sciamma’s other works often do.
