Céline Sciamma is a rockstar, childhood is trauma, and gender is a fucking prison!
-
the relationship between mikäel and jeanne was the most beautiful portrayal of siblinghood I've ever seen on screen, and makes me miss crawling into my brothers bed when I was scared at night. It's incredible that céline captures the essence of complex emotions, relationships, and the feeling of longing for something/someone in the most delicately gentle way.

How does she do it???
Céline Sciamma has this really weird/specific thing about all her movies that makes anything feel like it’s on fire. Like there’s this one specific shot in here where Mikäel is running down a path but the only thing in focus is a leaf and everything (besides Mikäel) is completely static and somehow it felt so LOUD. Lots of moments like that where I try and picture anyone recreating the shot but not capturing that same energy. This AND Portrait had little to no music and feel like they’re screeeaming at me. I think that’s beautiful and again, literally don’t know how she does it.
This was less of a review for this specific film and more of a note on her style but I’m gonna ride with it anyways.

y’all have no idea how badly i wanted to scream at his mom and shake her by the shoulders holy shit
-
gender is a performance and the script is passed down from people who can't explain why to people who won't ask. i think about the dinner scene every day of my life. it brings me to happy tears. the most beautiful sibling relationship i've ever seen on film. i wish i had a daughter like jeanne. i wish i could console a kid like mikael. i wish i could remember my childhood. i wish i could reshape it.
why on god's green earth is there a wilhelm scream in this movie
-
CÉLINE SCIAMMA!!!!!!! this has one of the purest sibling relationships i’ve ever seen in film :’)

JEANNE IS THE MOST PRECIOUS CREATURE ON THIS EARTH, AND I WOULD LAY MY LIFE DOWN FOR HER. MY LIFE, DO YOU UNDERSTAND?
Sciamma | Directed by Women

I cried and cried and cried for the final thirty minutes.
When I was young, I hated being a girl. I hated it more than I think I’ve ever hated anything in my life. I was so deeply uncomfortable with femininity, with how I was treated like I was fragile, with how the world perceived me and instilled so much insecurity into me and so much judgement onto me. My mom made it really clear that she did not approve of how boyish I acted and that made my insecurities infinitely worse. I thought something was broken inside me. I used to lay in bed at night and cry because I felt so wrong. I used to wish I was…

Around thirty minutes in, I thought to myself that Céline Sciamma can practically film a leaf and still be able to evoke emotion from you...and then in Tomboy, she ends up doing exactly that! The child actors are adorable, especially Jeanne, but it’s also impressive how natural all of their performances felt — how does she do it.

Céline Sciamma knows how to make movies man

Fuck gender
All my homies got a complicated relationship with gender
