This is probably my mom’s all time favorite movie. It does seem like it represents the collective, aspirational dream of a previous generation: all classy setups, clever characters, extremely good looking people—and impeccable tailoring! Seriously, one of the most amazing things about rewatching this at the quarter century(!) mark is how Brosnan’s wardrobe looks absolutely on point for the year 2024.
The movie is also, in retrospect, something of an anachronism; it updates the setting from its late 1960s original to the late 1990s, but it still very much has the sensibility of that earlier time with its belief in the inherent interestingness of interesting people doing interesting things, without a CG explosion to be found. What it does better than most derivatives is entertain; it’s a brisk romp, never boring for a moment, and actually reasonably smart in its heist antics. There’s almost nothing to dislike about this movie (except Faye Dunaway’s overwrought performance) even if it doesn’t actually feel like the best way to spend two hours.
