I recently rewatched the Michael Keaton classic Birdman, or (2014) on Hulu. The storyline follows a former actor who was once famous for portraying a superhero character but is now facing a fading career. He decides to write, direct, and fund a Broadway production in hopes of revitalizing his career, but as opportunities arise, his sanity begins to falter.
Directed by Alejandro Iñárritu (The Revenant), this picture stars Michael Keaton (Beetlejuice), Zach Galifianakis (The Hangover), Edward Norton (Fight Club), Emma Stone (Zombieland), and Naomi Watts (Mulholland Drive).
This is an elite and authentic character piece. The writing is outstanding, and the relationships between characters are genuine and well-executed. The challenges of reaching greatness, losing it, and becoming obsessed with achieving it again are entertaining yet realistic. Keaton delivers his character perfectly, and Norton, Galifianakis, and Stone deliver great supporting performances. There are so many smart twists and turns, and the conclusion is magical.
In conclusion, Birdman, or is a brilliant character piece that’s an absolute must-see. I would score it a 9/10 and strongly recommend it.
