Absolutely as devastating as just about everyone who watches this film would have you believe, Dear Zachary: A Letter to a Son About His Father is about as raw and real a film as you will ever see.
Amateur director Kurt Kuenne here demonstrates the visceral power of film, without ever intending it in the way it has come to be known. This is both the film's blessing - as you are unlikely to see anything that better fits the description of "coming from the heart" - and curse - as it lingers for too long on the extended family members of Andrew Bagby, robbing the audience of time with two of the strongest people who have ever lived, David and Kate Bagby.
Some reviews here have openly ruined what occurs as the film progresses, but for me, that was an anvil to the head moment that could have knocked me off my feet. So I won't say anything more than this is a film that you are not likely to forget. Mainly because it is almost impossible to accurately describe with mere written words the empathy it elicits for the pain of other human beings.
In fact, I'll go further: Every lawyer and judge involved in courts of law that deal with murder should be expected to watch this film as part of their training.
