Scooby-Doo! in Arabian Nights

Scooby-Doo! in Arabian Nights

Ruh Roh Raggy! #7

One of the greatest scams of my generation.

I still remember suffering through this as a very young child, so young I’m kinda amazed I have memories of this. That’s how bad this sucked, it became a defining memory for me.

I remember getting excited to watch it, I was a big fan of Scooby even then, but that excitement vanished pretty quick once SCOOBY FUCKING LEAVES THE FILM FOR 30 MINUTES! I even remember my dad audibly wondering where Scooby went.

So get this. This TV special, the first new Scooby content since A Pup Named Scooby-Doo ended three years earlier, says fuck Scooby-Doo and instead uses Shaggy and Scoob as bait to draw you into this shitty parody actually starring Yogi Bear and Manilla Gorilla. Shaggy and Scoob only get about 15 minutes of screentime.

But they share it with the impeccable Eddie Deezen so it’s not a complete loss.

This was also the final time Don Messick would voice Scooby in a show or film and it’s a crappy way to end it.

The plot is basically Shaggy and Scooby become royal food testers, mess up, disguise themselves as part of the Caliph’s harem, the Caliph falls for Shaggy in drag, so Shaggy tells boring stories to delay the wedding. Whatever.

First story has Yogi Bear stand-in for the Genie in this gender-swapped ripoff of Aladdin. It’s really not that bad, basic af, but not terrible. But it’s Aladdin, you know what happens and next to no jokes land, so it’s still rather dull.

Then Manilla Gorilla… does stuff with Sinbad. My eyes had unfocused by this time and I genuinely couldn’t tell you what happened. It was mind numbing nonsense that just never shut up.

The animation isn’t “bad” per se, it reminded me of what a lot of 90’s cartoons looked like and it’s reminiscent of A Pup Named Scooby-Doo, it’s serviceable. But I can confidently say that this is, without a doubt, the ugliest animated Scooby-Doo film to date. They went and made this as bland and flat as they could. Every object is one flat color, they said fuck shadows, everything looks so basic it’s wild this was advertised as a big deal.

In a worse timeline this kills the franchise but we were lucky and were gifted with a stretch of masterpieces a few years in the future. But I’ll get there next time. This blows, don’t watch it. Do watch Scooby-Doo.
