In my initial viewings, I was focused on Monroe and Cage’s performance as well as how the story unravels and connects throughout. I came out of my first viewing feeling underwhelmed, and while it could never live up to the hype built around it, I’m now on my fourth viewing and still thinking about it. That’s gotta say something at least.
There are so many memorable elements that I can’t help but love, whether it’s Cage’s unnerving yet somehow campy and fun performance, or how even the side characters always have some witty one liner to throw at you (“I’m going to need you to get on the fucking ground”)
The whole movie has something interesting to throw at you, and while it doesn’t always work for me (The exposition near the end in particular) I still always come back to it for a fun thrill ride. The short runtime really helps it! Also very struck by Blair Underwood’s performance this viewing. His deliveries are such peak tired gruff cop and he really glues the whole movie together!
