Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse

A beautiful and special wet dream for Spider-Man fans that feels like a project that we would have never seen in theaters. How this film exists is beyond me; I was hesitant on the idea once I learned that there were going to be a bunch of different Spider-Men, but somehow Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse makes it all work. From its themes, characters, animation, soundtrack; it all ends up working, with incredibly feats in every department.

Most note worthy is its animation, which looks like a 2D comic book despite being 3D. The overall aesthetic that the film carries is fantastic and fits Miles Morales as a character. I love that each of the Spider-Men have a completely different aesthetic that clashes with his, making each character stand out on their own as well as simply looking incredible. There's a few choppy animation moments in the film, especially early on where Miles is getting ready for school, but thankfully it didn't get distracting nor ever bad to look at.

There's a few themes running in this film, the biggest one being that everyone can be a Spider-Man, and if you're at all a fan, then you know what that means and it's a typical theme that we've seen plenty of times before. It's perfected here, I think, as having different Spider-Men gets the point across easier. Yes, any color, any gender, from anywhere and any time; everyone can be a Spider-Man.

I had a few issues here, such as Fisk vs Miles didn't feel... Right? They find a way to make it mean something towards the end, but it felt aimless at times. I also didn't feel a good sense of chemistry between the Spider-Men, which makes me wish we had more time between them, hanging around, and perhaps teaching Miles more about being a Spider-Man before the third act. Also, there's a few times where they shoot their webs up at nothing to swing, which took me out of it.

I overall really loved this film, and experiencing an animated Spider-Man film where Spider-Gwen shows up as well as Peni Parker (God, I won't get over how happy my [debatable] weeb ass got when she showed up) is amazing. The animation is stunning, the aesthetic fits its character, and the emotion all hits when it has to. It's funny when it needs to be, and for the most part balances its tone fairly well. I'm impressed on every level; Spider-Man did it again.
