Téchiné takes to southwestern France for a pastoral idyll whose sun-drenched landscapes from the start are simmering with malcontent, even before the actual eruption of dread. “The end of childhood” as one wayward boy finds himself wrapped up in the plot of two escaped convicts, though the film gradually becomes something else entirely as his mother tries to untangle his lies from the truth. Deneuve’s harried divorcée irrationally finding herself capable of so much more than her little world’s set of expectations ever prepared her for.
