“And that’s what we’re here for, to estimate the inestimable.” A life misspent by plundering everything that’s been lost to time and history, figuring out that some things in this world retain their haunting beauty only by remaining lost; the way even just looking at these long-buried Etruscan artifacts is enough to instantly tarnish them. Rohrwacher injects it all with some fascinating mystical flourishes and Felliniesque bursts of rambunctiousness, though it’s ultimately devoted to this overly precious rustic-chic Instagram aesthetic. A film so insistent on its twee, world-weary existence as a kind of living, breathing folk ballad, it’s like pondering the distance between actively being beguiled and actually finding something beguiling. “I wanted to ask you if you’ve seen something that was mine but I can’t find it.”
