I think I finally get it.
It helped to think of Art not as a human, but as one of the sharks in Sharknado. The whole movie was a good reminder that we should be rooting for the victims and not the despicable serial killer (no matter HOW much rizz he has).

Wow, I never thought I'd get to watch Hereditary for the first time again.
They may have made a few of the most incomprehensibly foolish choices, but the plight of these siblings is utterly horrifying and a terrible joy to watch.
