it’s true, barbie (2023) is everything.
i have never been in such a consistent looking screening, a sea of pink, barbie related clothes. dolls sat in drink holders. so filled with joy.
greta gerwig has truly made something magical here. yet another story about growing up and being a woman and the very mess that is life itself. it’s sad and it’s happy and it’s funny (it’s so very funny.) it’ll make you laugh and then it’ll tug on your heartstrings so fiercely that you’re crying and maybe you’re not even sure why.
(i am sure however that any time margot robbie’s barbie cried, i felt like i had been punched in my face. this may be my favourite performance of her’s.)
honestly, the entire casting for this — beautifully done. ryan gosling and america ferrera have standout performances and i love how many of the sex education cast are in this, sorry.
it has the little tiny quintessential barbie details pulled from everyone’s childhood that make it feel so instilled with love. it’s nostalgia in the best way, wrapped in a brightly coloured bow.
it’s my movie of the year, even though its only july.
