I think we're drawn into films about robots because they can be so aspirational. Machines are reflections of our hopes, our dreams, our qualities, and if we're lucky they reflect the best parts of us in ways that continue to inspire others. The Wild Robot adds a brilliant lens to this aspect of robot cinema by being framed as a story of parenthood, fostering community, and finding purpose.
The story is delivered with a sleight of hand that genuinely snuck up on me, so that once it starts revealing itself and paying off its setups I was struck so hard by its emotional heft. This shouldn't be surprising given Chris Parker's previous animated works which are filled with just as much heart. It's also absolutely gorgeous, with plenty of compositions that blew me away.
