Are there many more tense moments in film than when a single character is floating untethered in the void of space? Doesn’t that just restrict your chest’s breathing and unspool your mind’s stranglehold on our limited reality? It drops the floor from under your feet while lifting your head off your shoulders. The “what would I do?” knee-jerk kicks in and you’re transported into that floating body like few other invitations as an audience member. That anxiety is shared by David Gyasi’s Romilly who’s having difficulty getting his space legs while on the crew’s long journey. Cooper dispenses some perspective: some of Earth’s greatest competitive boat racers don’t know how to swim, that they’re explorers and this ship is their boat. And this is what I want to talk about (and thanks for reading this far). Cooper hands Romilly his headphones which are playing rainstorm sounds. As much as Cooper’s words helped, these sounds warmly coat and reassure and fill the void in Romilly’s head. Cut to the rainstorm playing overtop a wide shot of their small ship coasting around Saturn. Suddenly that endless night sky has the borders of a rainforest with wooden columns like bars on a crib, leafy canopies sheltering you like umbrellas. My jaw unclenched, my shoulders dropped. Tranquility in the face of infinity. It’s such a light, graceful unexpected touch in a Nolan movie, however you land on Nolan the filmmaker (filmbro darling, hands of stone). I wanted to live in that moment longer, but that’s what forums like this are for: pulling at the threads that tickle us in particular. What are those threads for you?
