God. The pacing wasn’t perfect, but if I had a nickel for every time Chris Sanders made me cry over a creature and their autistic adoptive family, I’d have three nickels. Which isn’t a lot, but it’s weird that it happened thrice.
As promised by the previews and the practices pushed by Puss in Boots, the characters and environments were gorgeous. A beautiful combination of the stylized animation used in The Last Wish and the painted backgrounds that Sanders utilized in Lilo & Stitch. So many brush strokes and colors that made the world feel a whole lot richer.
Lupita Nyong’o shines as Roz, the titular wild robot who - after a series of unfortunate circumstances - finds herself tasked with raising a gosling named Brightbill (Kit Connor). The emotions she conveys through a robot without a mouth or facial expressions beyond camera lenses adjustments results in some really powerful scenes portraying the joys and struggles of parenting (big credit to the character animators, as well). I wish the pacing had been a little less choppy to allow Roz and Brightbill a little more breathing room, and there were some songs that felt unnecessary to the story being told (in my opinion, anyway), but aside from that? Loved it. Cried twice.
