A mixed bag, though one where the balance generally falls towards the positive.
The animation leaves a bit to be desired, perhaps because of the rushed production. And the constant callbacks to the Jackson trilogy (up to and including copy-pasted lines of dialogue) make it difficult for this film to stand on its own merits.
But there are moments where this breaks out of the shadow of its franchise, offering a different perspective on Middle Earth, more in line with some of the darker, more Shakespearian stories found in The Silmarillion.
