“People love what other people are passionate about. You remind people of what they forgot.”
“Here’s to the fools who dream, foolish as they may seem.”
Every time. Every damn time. The feeling this film gives me is still unmatched. Just pure joy, inspiration, and emotion. Following your dreams and chasing what it is that make you, and you only, happy.
This film demonstrates the dilemma that people face in pursuing their dreams while giving up what they love and making sacrifices. Sometimes if you want to chase that dream, do what you love and are passionate about, you have to sacrifice something else in order to make that dream a reality. I find so much of myself in Sebastian’s character. Passionate about so many things that mean so much to me but never taking that step to chasing them. Achieving your dreams sometimes comes at a price. I’ve watched this film countless times by now, and even knowing how it ends, you still just can’t help that things work out between Sebastian & Mia. But that’s why the ending of this film is so perfect in my eyes. It hits you with a seemingly bittersweet reality that, while it could have worked out perfectly for them, ultimately in the end, both of them achieved what they wanted and they are both happy, not just because they did what they dreamed of, but for each other. It’s an absolutely heartbreaking yet bittersweet exploration of the theme of love & sacrifice. Sebastian & Mia ultimately chose to prioritize their dreams and ambition over their relationship which led to them going separate ways. That final scene, them sharing a long glance and smiling at each other, shows that even though they had to sacrifice their relationship in order to achieve their dreams, they will always love each other.
He nods. She smiles. Life goes on, knowing they’re happy for each other. And while I’m almost always in tears by the time the credits roll, I’m simply just so happy that this film exists.
Thank you Damien Chazelle for creating this masterpiece. This will forever remain in a special place in my heart. It will always remind me to follow my heart, chase my dreams, do whatever it is that I’m passionate about, and love every part of the journey.
Thank you for reading if you did :)
(Side note: Mia & Sebastian’s Theme is most likely going to be my #1 played song this year)
