Man O man, Aaron Pierre was just phenomenal. As a one man army who wants no blood, he simply aces the silent badass role with his terrific screen presence. His deadpan stoic look makes it all the more powerful and imposing.
Jeremy Saulnier is back with a slow burn thriller. Though it treads on a formulaic underdog route dealing with systemic corruption and social injustice, he keeps the show as grounded, as purposeful and as close to reality, while gradually escalating the tension and gives it a fresh spin subverting our expectations. When it comes to building suspense and tension, he is truly masterful. After an intense first half, It does feel slightly overlong during the conspiracy mode in the second. Given the mood, would have loved more of Saulnieric styled visual storytelling than high talkative ones. Nevertheless, it keeps you thoroughly engaged and the brilliantly explosive hand to hand combat actions only add to the proceedings. On the whole, it ends up as one solid small town action drama that I would strongly recommend.
