Driven by metaphors, almost necessary to watch with subtitles and stylish to a fault, SEXY BEAST is nevertheless fascinating. Its wavering dramatic tension is a testament less to faults in its pacing or writing than the deft manner in which the script and Glazer push past the sorts of hangups most filmmakers would make an entire movie out of. Seedy pasts are dredged up for Ray Winstone and his close-knit group, be it ignoble professions and/or sexual exploits, yet no character ever gets lost in shame or insecurity. Exceptionally cross-cut sequences of heists and violence are a draw, but the real pleasure is in seeing couples never taking the bait when it comes to reminders of their partners' sex lives, instead sufficiently in love with each other to care only for their lives now, which they will defend far more vigilantly than they will the past.
