It was my suggestion to watch this with the family for Christmas. I discovered an old copy stored away in the garage and none of them had watched it before, so I thought It’d be the perfect choice. To my disappointment they found the film quite boring. Can you believe that? I kept reassuring them that the film would get better but they still just sat there feeling bored. It was enough to actually hamper my enjoyment of the film this time around. I guess I somewhat understand. They expected a typical jolly Christmas family film, whereas this film spends majority of its time telling the story of a person’s life before it even reaches the Christmas setting. And for what’s considered to be one of the great Christmas classics, this film also has very little moments of joy until the very end, I’ve now realised. But to me that’s beauty of it. By the end you perceive what is a fairly ordinary life as something truly wonderful. Oh well, the ending was a big hit at least, so I’m happy about that.
And to all of you reading, I wish you a very Merry Christmas 🎄
