I want to go rambling through fields at dawn, get my petticoat six inches deep in mud, have a handsome gentleman insult my family in the rain, and break my promise to never dance with him.
i just knew i was being an idiot the previous time i watched the band wagon. there are numbers that are truly head-scratching to me (triplets? huh?!) but cyd charisse is the best to ever do it, like there’s never been a more perfect dancer put to film. her lines are so clean and her dresses are so sparkly! girl hunt ballet deserves every accolade. we are starved for technicolor down here now too and this did truly refresh the soul.
visuals visuals visuals, all throughout. but impossible to deny how much i perked up at y2k vampire lovers. here was something comfortable and familiar for my brain to connect with, also finally another woman on screen (i love shu qi but there wasn’t enough of her either). while i’m not sure bi gan’s surrealist films are totally meant for me, every frame certainly is a work of art.
