A Real Pain 2024
It took me almost a whole week to write this review because I've just been thinking about how to fit all my thoughts into a nearly formatted document. I don't think I can, even still. This is my first attempt at doing so.
I'd like to start by saying - without doxxing myself - a lot of the scenes were filmed where my family is from. The restaurant scene is the very same restaurant I used to go with my…

Heretic 2024
Someone called this Saw for religious theorists and I feel like this is a fairly accurate description.
The movie, especially the first act, might feel overlong to some. I do like the motif of "one true religion" present throughout the movie and in some parts it's more of a drama than it is a horror. I'll try not to give away too much but it's not necessarily an anti-religious movie as it is religion-questioning. Not sure if I'd show it…

Conclave 2024
As an ex-Catholic this was an interesting insight into the inner workings of the church with some thriller/drama on the side.
I've not read the book but I certainly plan on it now. Some criticize the multiple twists as "cheap", I didn't really see it as such. Conclave is certainly entertaining, striking a really great balance between laid-back and serious. It's rare to see cardinals portrayed as just ordinary men, who make the same mistakes ordinary men do. Being a…

Sing Sing 2023
Deeply charmed by this film and I'll be thinking about it for a long time.
Really touching portrayal of what it means to be human and how everybody, prisoner or not, deserves to have a chance to rehabilitate. Watching this felt reminiscent to seeing a sun ray peek through the clouds on a particularly rainy day, even if only for a moment.
I was shocked to learn Clarence Maclin has served time and is in fact playing himself, his performance…

Anora 2024
If you watch this movie expecting to learn something about the titular character, you're in the wrong place.
Mikey Madison is terrific but even her performance could not bring the character to life. The line between her personal life and her work is nonexistent - I'd go as far as to say, we don't get to know her as a person at all. We don't know where she came from, what drives her, what are her interests, why she's working…

Maestro 2023
"Bohemian Rhapsody" for people with a Criterion Channel subscription.
Soulless husk of a film that feels like a bunch of anecdotes haphazardly thrown together more than a cohesive narrative. It fails to make any sort of emotional impact for 3/4 of the film and after the boring three quarters it barely registers. Somehow equally chaotic and boring. Acting unremarkable, it does have that Netflix movie quality to it. Whole thing feels like an insult to Bernstein's work. Points for cinematography and make up.
