Of course the main issue is its take on the trans experience and how it approaches it. It never fully tackles the issues it brings up, rather just touches on them and moves on without saying anything of value.
Occasionally they throw in a touching one liner that I could find on any tumblr post circa 2014 that comes off as a failed attempt at a “girlboss”moment because they want the audience to know this is DEFINITELY a super serious and deep movie and they would NEVER make a joke out of trans people (*cough* penis into vagina song *cough*). Not to mention many plot lines that feel like flat out stereotypes of trans people? (“Smelling” like a man still, leaving behind your family to transition, voice gets deeper when you’re angry at someone, etc.)
Ignoring all these things, the movie is still bad. Zoe Saldaña and Karla Sofia Gascón are fine, and Selena Gomez should never act again. The musical numbers are horrible and at times just childish (you already know the one). And the whole thing is just trying to be too many things at once and it’s not doing a good job at any of it. It’s constantly shoving sentimental moments at you and forcing you to feel emotional during half of its 50 horrid songs but it’s all phony and trying too hard. Not to mention the ending is horrendous.
There’s a lot of Awards season buzz for this one and i honestly cannot see how it could win anything except for maybe something for editing and cinematography
