Drive

Drive

“There's a hundred-thousand streets in this city. You don't need to know the route. You give me a time and a place, I give you a five minute window. Anything happens in that five minutes and I'm yours. No matter what. Anything happens a minute either side of that and you're on your own. Do you understand?”

I rewatched my Second Sight Drive 4K tonight, and once again, it was an absolutely fantastic experience. Drive remains as one of Ryan Gosling’s best films, in my opinion, if not the best. He plays the quiet loner with his signature charm, but this time he dives into darker emotional territory, delivering some truly violent moments. His minimal dialogue lets him build an intense presence, relying on facial expressions and body language to communicate the depth of his character. The film uses his silence expertly to create some incredibly tense and gripping sequences. Carey Mulligan as Irene is another brilliant actor in this film, adding some emotional depth and complexity to the film. Bryan Cranston’s performance as Shannon is fantastic as well. Oscar Isaac, Albert Brooks, and the rest of the cast all deliver exceptional supporting roles, each making their mark on the story. I truly felt there was not a single miscast character here. Nicolas Winding Refn’s direction is clean and precise, maintaining a rhythm that keeps you engaged without any drag as well as keeping your head NODDING to the beat of the score.

The cinematography in Drive is stunning. The 4K disc of this film has one of my favorite intro audio scenes of all time, which I use as a demo disc to show the capabilities of a 7.2.4 setup, as it’s such a kickass ATMOS track, especially hearing the helicopters in the intro scene since, it sounded like the heli was literally hovering over you from the upward firing speakers. It's quite frankly some of the best loseless audio I've heard on a disc! The soundtrack of Drive is nothing short of iconic with its heavy synthwave inspiration. After many rewatches looking beyond its thrilling narrative, Drive is an incredibly artistic film, with visuals that enhance the storytelling and make every shot feel purposeful. I find myself always noticing something I had not caught on a previous watch, which makes this a joy to revisit every time. I really love the setting and costumes, especially his iconic scorpion jacket, which has become a symbol of the film. Overall, Drive is a perfect film in my eyes. From the cinematography to the special effects, everything is absolutely top tier!
