The performances, the raw realism, the cinematography, and of course the fact than Ryan Gosling is literally me. Watching this in the middle of the night with distant car noises coming from my window is a generationally amazing feeling. Everyone loves to compliment that elevator sequence (and for good reason, it’s immaculate), but that ending with the stab ‘fight’ is so satisfying, and so well-crafted it needs a star of its own. The long pause, the song, and me driving away - leaving what really took place to interpretation is brilliant. It’s tragic, it’s beautiful, it’s mysterious, and it might be my best performance ever? Aesthetically, this film has a wonderfully crafted noir tone. Great stuff. I think we could’ve gotten more from Driver’s great relationship with the kid, but fantastic picture.
