I liked it even more the second watch. My favourite aspect of the film is the nuance written in the characters. The character of Lewis Strauss (Robert Downey Jr) was depicted a bit over the top as a baddie in the final 30 minutes but his dialogue (the words and not the way he delivers the words) paints a fair picture in the way Oppenheimer was viewed and is viewed today. We also get the side of the Oppenheimer image that was fair too. The side in which his concerns were valid. I love films that show the political machinations behind the scenes. Loved that.
Just perfect writing in the exploration of not only a very complicated man but a very complicated set of circumstances in which there is no easy answer. Oppenheimer, is no doubt, the finest piece of serious drama that Nolan has written and directed.
I just wish Nolan would fix his sound design fetish of drowning out dialogue with booming score. It's not as bad in this film as in previous but when I watch his films at the IMAX, there are sequences in which I just have to fill in myself. This viewing was at home of course and it's not as noticeable.
