All these years later, it’s still hard for me to believe how much control and confidence M. Night had in his writing process and his ability as a director, especially when it comes to establishing and maintaining tension. The Sixth Sense feels like a film most directors have to build up to, needing time to craft their voice, process, and how they work and communicate with actors.
The Sixth Sense is also remarkable in how compassionately it treats characters who’re filled to the brim with hurt and sadness. The audience can feel the love M. Night has for his characters and it makes Sense the most empathetic mainstream horror movie since Silence of the Lambs. The uniformly great performances help the audience reach a high level of emotional catharsis. Osment’s performance has held up wonderfully and a strong argument can be made for calling it the greatest child performance of all time, as without it, the movie would crumble under its own weight. Osment is especially dialed in when he shares the screen with Toni Collette, a critical aspect to the success of the movie as their relationship is the heart of the film. I’m not sure this is something I fully recognized when I was younger, but the greatness of Collette’s performance lies in her ability to tap into the fierce protectiveness you feel as a parent, especially when your child goes through something traumatic. The love she has for her son is beautiful and unconditional. She continually tries new ways to help and guide her son, all the while fighting her own sense of despair and hopelessness about their situation. It’s a staggering performance and wonderful way to introduce cinephiles to one of the best actresses of her generation.
