Greg Rath-Pribyl’s review published on Letterboxd:
I don't hold the Ghostbusters franchise to the same high standard that a lot of other people do. I enjoyed the original film but It's not a classic by any means. It's just a fun 80s blockbuster with cool practical effects, some good jokes, and a awesome theme song. Ghostbusters II is just plain bad (even if you have a nostalgic soft spot for it, you got to admit that it’s not very good), and Ghostbusters (2016) was about as average as I expected it to be. Ghostbusters Afterlife was the one that I actually enjoyed the most (despite its obvious problems). It was what made me want to check out Frozen Empire. Now that I have seen it, what did I think of it?
It was fun but definitely needed a script doctor!
This is a film that is WAY too overstuffed, both in story and characters. Story-wise there will be some plots that are introduced and then you almost forget about (including the backstory behind the villain that will supposedly create the titular Frozen Empire). Character-wise, there are a fair number of people who could have been cut out. Bill Murray, Annie Potts, William Atherton, and ESPECIALLY Slimer don't have a reason to be in this film aside from bringing back as many members of the original cast as possible. I have grown to like the new Ghostbusters (especially Phoebe!) and I wish the film focused more on them instead of the old ones.
If I had to rank the Ghostbusters movies, this one would probably be in the middle. I can't say I enjoyed it as much as Afterlife or the original, but it is more entertaining than Ghostbusters II and the 2016 reboot. I'd say if you are a fan of this franchise than I do recommend it. The theater I was at was having a good time and I think you will too if you are just looking for a fun 2-hour popcorn movie. Just don't set your expectations too high!
