'Wicked' brings a magical and atmospheric adaptation of the classic musical with excellent technical effects, great performances, and fantastic stories, despite a hefty and slightly bloated runtime.

This one definitely intrigued me with the recent acclaim, and I'd say it's easily worth a lot of the hype, despite some flaws I'll touch on later.

First off, the technical aspects make this film a marvel. It's a beautifully made film, and one that makes things so fantastical. There's going to be a heavy battle between this film and 'Dune Part Two' for the technical awards come Oscar Season.

The performances are very good. Cynthia Erivo plays the lead in a sympathetic and impactful manner. I would definitely like to see her get some acclaim for this role, because she brings a heavy sense of power to the role. Ariana Grande is also very good in the supporting role of Glinda and Michelle Yeoh, Jeff Goldblum, and Peter Dinklage also round out the minor roles very well.

Thematically, I understand why this story is very popular. I thought the themes going against confirmity and discrimination were superb. I liked how they were done here, and I'm looking forward to how they are expanded upon in Part Two.

Yet, my biggest flaw with this film is the runtime. I have no problem with them deciding to make this a two-parter, but I don't understand why Part One had to be almost 3 hours. It feels like there's a lot of fluff that could've been cut down, and it balances a little too much. Subplots like the romance one I couldn't get invested in, as it felt a little too unoriginal, but I understand the significance of that one, and hopefully it's improved upon in Part Two. Yet, the runtime does not ruin the film, nor does it ever get boring, thankfully.

'Wicked' is definitely one of the year's best, and I'd highly recommend it to all.
