Well, this was just extraordinary.
A true work of art.
I already admired Mikhail Kalatozov due to his masterpiece 'The Cranes Are Flying', so I was extremely excited to finally watch this one and it did not disappoint.
'Letter' follows a group of geologists sent to the Siberian wilderness to search for diamonds. The group comprises of Tanya (Tatiana Samoilova), Konstantin (Innokenty Smoktunovsky), Andrei (Vasily Livanov) and Sergei (Yevgeni Urbansky).

I feel like I'm giving five stars out to every screwball comedy I see from the 30s and 40s, but this one truly deserves it.
It's a joy from start to finish, and has so much heart it is impossible not to be charmed by it.
One of the greatest scripts from the classic Hollywood era combined with some truly endearing performances make this one of the best romantic comedies ever created.

Criminally underseen, Broken Lullaby is a gripping and emotional anti-war film, directed by a man not usually known for hard hitting dramas, Ernst Lubitsch.
At a brisk 76 minutes, it feels ever so slightly undercooked but Lubitsch does enough with his direction to ensure it still feels thematically and emotionally rich.
Any drama that touches on the First World War and the senseless loss of life that occurred on both sides affects me greatly, and this was no exception.
