MaXXXine benefits from a well rounded, A-List cast, a committed performance by Goth and immersive camera work by West and cinematography by Eliot Rockett. I felt completely immersed thanks to West's direction. This film created an aura of the 70's that felt reminiscent of Taxi Driver. I loved the plot path of Maxines past coming back to haunt her. I also love the themes of religious zealots and the sinister ways of Hollywood.
Has a great balance of Stylistic and campy. It's pleasantly filmed but complemented by eerily symmetrical set designs and maniacal acting. I felt really engrossed and entertained by this writing as well. This is a film that feels truly inspired and original and those are simply the cherries on top for me. This is an excellent B-movie that you should watch with a group and talk about afterwards, it'll become a cult classic as time goes on I'm sure.
I felt seen, represented, disappointed, entertained and unsettled after watching this film. It has all of the angst that a "LGBTQ coming of age film" should have. However I do think the horror elements of the film actually take away from some of the existential, prophetic tones of the film.
I feel I would have appreciated it more had it just been a drama with some unsettling images throughout because it wasn't as scary as it was cringeworthy to see…
