Got me even more emotional a second time around. I don't really get it, sneaks up on me. There's like 15 minutes of time between when Roz meets the gosling and it grows up and she's helping him fly. And then that big migration scenes comes up so fast and I'm just suddenly getting all teary eyed during it even though I'm like, we barely know them! It's been only a few minutes since he grew up! I think it comes from the passion of the animators, the people who made the film felt those emotions in the story and built them right into the performances & every single shot, and I can feel it through the screen.
There are two things that The Wild Robot does that few animated movies ever do. Even though it's meant for kids (yes yes animation is for everyone, I know) it speaks so clearly & bluntly about death. And it doesn't ignore it or try to make everyone survive - death is a part of nature, it is natural, it happens, and it deals with this and talks about it. Secondly it also openly discusses how we're not all friends. Fink's big winter speech is basically "I hate most of you, all of you hate me, that's fine, but let's also take care of each other together so we can all survive" and I find it so profoundly touching that the film doesn't pretend we all must love each other. Some of us don't like each other and that's totally okay, too. These two themes discussed so openly is a major thing.
