there's a section near the end that recounts a Réunionese legend of two lovers escaping their slavery and it's extremely beautiful in both image and heft; it also reminded me of ongoing conversations surrounding acts of revolutionary suicide, and the ways these actions are contextualized, erased, forgotten, and buried. liberals and their ilk like to tell us that political self-death is to be reported on and covered carefully in the media, without fanfare and detail so as to stifle "copycats." here, Etangsalé and her father prove what utter bullshit we know this to be.
