Tucker and Dale vs. Evil

Tucker and Dale vs. Evil

Quickie Review (Screams To Stream 4: The Gauntlet Of Death)
I continue to traverse through THE GAUNTLET OF DEATH as Screams To Stream 4 rolls on with Eli Craig's subversive cult horror-comedy that turns the killer hillbilly trope seen in many horror movies on its head. All innocent hillbilly boys Tucker (Alan Tudyk) & Dale (Tyler Labine) wanted to do was have a relaxing time at Tucker's "vacation home" in the woods and enjoy getting away from it all. Instead, they have to deal with a band of paranoid college kids who mistake them for killer hillbillies and when one of their own, Ali (Katrina Bowden), accidentally hits her head while going for a nighttime swim and while she gets to know the boys as Dale tends to her bump in the head, the hilariously inept college gang think that Ali is kidnapped and mount a rescue attempt that increasingly and comically goes wrong. I was constantly bugged a lot by another LB user about this movie and he kept asking me if I had seen this movie and luckily, Netflix still had the movie available for streaming and I was setting up the shortlist for STS4 AND it stuck around long enough to stay on the final lineup so here we are. The movie takes the killer hillbilly trope and puts a subversive spin on it. Instead of the hillbillies being killers, they're actually just a pair of good-hearted, innocent guys who got wrapped up in the stupidity of prejudiced and idiotic college kids, with the exception of Ali. It's that same kind of subversiveness that Eli Craig would repeat with his next movie, the Netflix film Little Evil. The comedic elements are genuinely hilarious with Tudyk & Labine providing funny and endearing performances while the horror elements is extremely gruesome with practical gore effects and it's punctuated by some solid twists and turns. Tucker & Dale vs. Evil is an entertaining mix of bloody horror and bloody good laughs and it leads to one acceptable conclusion: it's the paranoid college types you got to watch out for, not the hillbillies that just want to go on vacation.

My journey through THE GAUNTLET OF DEATH continues! Next up: Slaughterhouse Rulez!
