been watching a lot of capra movies recently (for jean arthur specifically) and consistently find myself wishing that the whole runtime was dedicated to the lead characters' respective romances? i know the larger themes of all-american idealism and wholesome human kindness are the ultimate point of his films and a crucial factor as to why they're so revered, but then jimmy stewart will say some shit to jean like, "You're so beautiful. Like, sometimes you're so beautiful it just gags me. Maybe you're not real? Maybe you're a phantom or something? I... I keep expecting you to vanish," and i'm standing up and clapping my hands and chanting LOVE IS REAL LOVE IS REAL LOVE IS REAL!!!!!

i just want jimmy stewart to accept me and my quirky ass family, even if my father sometimes tries to blow up the house with fireworks and my sister’s russian dance teacher (who is always at our house for some reason) sometimes picks people up and slams them down onto the living room floor without their consent. is that too much to ask
Forget about its timeless moral message. This movie has Jean Arthur swinging down the banister wearing suspenders adorned with flowers, shouting merrily 'Wheeee, WITHOUT HOLDING!!!' just days after walking into a fancy restaurant with a sign accidentally left on her back reading 'NUTS' in big bright letters. Suffice to say, I was sold right away.

My feelings towards the film really changed as it went on, as I found the earlier, broader scenes weaker than the later, more poignant parts, with the first couple of acts feeling quite dated and tedious in comparison. A lot of this initial trepidation was down to the extensive focus on the central family at the beginning, as their quirks wore thin after a while, making them a little insufferable to start with.…
Even the cynic in me finds it hard to resist Frank Capra's gushy oddball optimism.
jimmy stewart screams whenever he doesn’t get what he wants so I’m just going to start screaming until he appears before me and we start dancing the big apple together. I have a really strong lung capacity so I’ll let you know how it turns out.

Sometimes Capra's naïveté and compulsive idealism works for me, sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes his films are infused with so much charm and sincerity, so many tender moments that they're close to magic. Here, it doesn't really work. The ideas are just a little too simple, or I should rephrase: the way he spreads the message. You know, the old "follow your dreams, live life to the fullest" stuff. Which I am a big supporter of, but topics like these just tend to fall a little flat in the hands of someone who maybe wasn't the most complex of thinkers, nor the most subtle of cinematic prophets. ౨ this is such a capra film! i love how his movies always have this cozy and comforting vibe that warms your heart while you’re watching it ♡ this is definitely capra’s funniest film! i couldn’t stop laughing, and neither could jimmy stewart :D the entire film i could see he trying to hold his laugh haha ♡
that court scene was so sweet and heartwarming, that it actually made me tear up :’) ♡ alice’s family was the cutest! — everyone was so peculiar & funny, i would’ve loved to be part of that family ♡
such a creative and fun film! definitely one of the best i’ve seen this year ♡ if you love screwball comedies as much as i do, you must add this one to your watchlist ♡ ৎ
