The toons spit out real water.
The toons reflect real moving light.
The toons smoke real cigars.
The toons tote real guns.
The toons smash real plates.
The toons look real people in their real eyes.
These toons aren't just drawn on top of an empty space in an already recorded scene. They are interacting with and living in the real world.
Completely, utterly groundbreaking. 100%, without a doubt, one of the most technically proficient films ever made. Pushes the boundaries of movie magic. Still jaw-droppingly impressive over 30 years later. This film is just pure craft and talent. Some of the best filmmaking I've ever seen.
It also manages to be a fun noir with loveable characters, a love letter to cartoons, and family-friendly (even though Judge Doom scared the shit out of me as a kid) while keeping the adults entertained. I love it.

save your breath scolding me for never having seen this and instead use that breath to scold me for thinking that her name is Jessica Rabbit, not because her married name is Rabbit, but because I thought she, too, was a rabbit, and in turn I spent half the movie being like, "okay, she's hot... but where are... the [rabbit] ears?" whatever. total technical marvel, a massive achievement in sound design, Hoskins is a literal genius. love the gag where he bends down to pull up his pants and knocks his head on Jessica's rack. a little too, uhh, for a lack of a better word, awooga-core(?) for me, but more than happy to finally fill this blind spot!

if i had seen this at age 11 the Jessica Rabbit intro scene would’ve made me spontaneously combust. i would’ve imprinted on her soooo hard like thousands -maybe millions- of others. i could’ve been normal. instead, i watched Flushed Away, and now i’m married to a rat. call me BRAT RAT
